Making a Tough Girl: Hilary Isaac's Journey

Written by: Shin Kitane/Monday, May 22, 2017 09:29 AM

Today, Hilary Isaac is a fitness athlete, mother, and bodybuilder. She also runs Tough Girl Online, a personal blog where she shares fitness advice stemming from her personal journey.

Hilary Isaac is a tough woman, there is no doubt about that. You can sense it in the way she talks, how she carries herself, and how she treats other people. We previously published her fitness tips for busy moms, and looking at her excellent physique and adorable son Asher, it's easy to say that she's an incredibly strong woman both physically and emotionally. What most people do not know though is that Hilary's love for fitness and bodybuilding only came after she faced a major setback in life: she was part of an abusive relationship.

"My life's an open book...with a few pages torn out of it!" Hilary jests as we sat down with her one afternoon to talk about her fitness journey, motherhood, and past relationships. "I got out of a traumatic relationship in 2015. I had to stop and think: Is this the kind of man I want around my son? No."

With a kind of honesty that allows her to inspire other women to take charge of their lives, Hilary shared how easy it was to fall into the trap of being in a relationship with the wrong person: "I moved out at a very young age, I tried to forge my own path and I think I looked for affection and validation in relationships, and I didn't realize it then." Hilary recounts how she had a relationship with a man who she thought was a good fit, but it turned out that he wasn't ready for the responsibility of being a partner to someone who had a child. After the first year of the relationship, things slowly started to turn sour as her then-partner made the relationship mainly about his fears: how he wasn't ready to be a dad, a husband yet, and how he wasn't sure when he was going to be ready. Soon enough, the man's fears turned the relationship into an emotionally manipulative one, and Hilary, despite being in the middle of a successful career as a TV and radio personality, felt that something was amiss. "When you're with a partner who doesn't value you or see the potential in you, it's very difficult to draw confidence in yourself on difficult days."

"I was just a shadow of my former self: all my self-confidence was gone, my self-esteem just dashed to pieces. I did not know who I was."

And so she walked out from it. She decided she needed a distraction and started to work on her fitness to channel her negative emotions into something productive. She got into a body building competition out of sheer curiosity and was thrilled to earn a win despite minimal preparation, and that was how it started. Just last year, Hilary was crowned Miss Gold's Gym 2016, and she continues to train herself and other women daily. Suffice it to say that when Hilary found something to be passionate about, something that allowed her to work on herself and feel good about who she was, she found healing and she found hersalf. She found strength, and is so much tougher both emotionally and physically--she is her own hero.
