It’s the ultimate of all ultimate bonding experiences—visiting a whole new place with your best friends and making new memories outside the usual places. But these trips can also be the ultimate test of your friendship. Eliminate the issues and avoid the pitfalls by planning your trip well, and by following our girlfriends’ guide to travelling!

Step One: Choose Your Destination

Most friends love to fantasize about the places they want to visit, and while we are advocates of ‘go big or go home’, choosing your destination can turn into one of those big arguments. Skip these problems and have short, medium and long-term destination #goals, which you rank in terms of how much planning needs to come into it before you go.

Start with a daytrip (how about a museum trip or a road trip to Washington?), then a longer road trip before you go to full monty. It helps you get a sense of each others’ everyday habits, and lets you adjust along the way. Reason for a sleepover? We think so!

Step Two: Plan Ahead

Now that you have a destination in mind (yay!) it’s never too early to start planning! While AirBnb and small boutique hotels give great places at great prices, signing up for newsletters for airlines and hotels can help you grab exclusive discounts. Booking early also helps you save in the long run. Just make sure you keep your dates open to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Step Three: But Don’t Plan Too Much

When you’ve got your hotel and flights ready and booked, it’s time to talk itinerary. Our suggestion is to give each other some alone time to explore places that you may not agree with—or at least time for you to revisit that market where you spotted that awesome dress or that art gallery you wish you could have lingered in.

Step Four: Assign Jobs

Yeah, this kind of sounds like a kindergarten thing, but assigning jobs can help save you a lot of grief during the trip. Who handles the finances? Who drives? Who navigates? Giving someone a job makes sure that the part of the trip is well taken care of.

Step Five: Don’t Lose Your Cool

Things will always go wrong! No matter how much you plan, there will always be a little snag in the plan. The best thing to do would be to calm down, look at your options and do what you have to do to get past the problem. Don’t waste your trip dwelling on the problems and have fun!
