Road Trip: A Quick Guide to Washington and New York

Looking for a quick trip away from home? Why not take a tour of some of America’s most beautiful autumn cityscapes in Washington DC and New York? Follow our mini-roadtrip guide to find out the best spots to drink your pumpkin spice latte and savour the best that the autumn has to offer.

The country’s capital shines in the fall, with the large, sprawling area of the National Mall beckoning you to explore it. Start your journey here to experience a more relaxed city atmosphere in one of the quaint little coffee shops by the Potomac River.

Georgetown (M Street)

The most historic neighbourhood in Washington is situated just outside the gates of Georgetown University. Wander through the little shops and find yourself on Key Bridge over the Potomac River. A short walk further along takes you to the legendary Georgetown Bakery, home of one of the best cupcakes ever. Two blocks down, and you have a chance to sip Frozen Hot Chocolate and Serendipity 3! What could be better?

The National Gallery Sculpture Gardens

If you want a cultural experience, make sure to visit the Sculpture Gardens beside the National Gallery at the National Mall. Featuring really cool sculptures (including a giant spider and a Parisian Metro entrance), the gardens also have an ice skating rink available from November to March.

New York

Take a train from Washington’s Union Station and find yourself smack dab in the heart of downtown New York City two hours later! The fast pace of the city reenergizes you, and it’s hard not to get lost in the hustle.

Central Park

Everything’s coming up fall in Central Park! Whether you choose to go for a run around the reservoir or sit by the fountain with the view of the Upper East Side, every little bit of the park has something in orange, red or yellow. Make sure you bring along your pumpkin spice latte.

Broadway + Carnegie Deli

Don't miss catching a show while in New York. Catch Lea Salonga and George Takei in Allegiance, a play about a Japanese-American Family in World War II. Not your thing? Choose between an all-female adaptation of Henry IV, The School of Rock the Musical, and the Color Purple with Jennifer Hudson! Be sure to walk a few blocks to the Carnegie for the ultimate autumn treat—a big ol’ Reuben Sandwich and Coconut cake from the legendary Carnegie Deli
