Plan the Ultimate Mom’s Day Out: San Francisco Edition

Written by: Carla De Guzman/Thursday, May 05, 2016 10:21 AM

There’s always a reason to celebrate mothers, and Mother’s Day just gives us the perfect excuse to spoil the number one woman in our lives. Why not spend the entire day with your mom? Catch up with each other, talk about anything and everything, and thank her for all the love she’s given you.

In this article, we give our little itinerary suggestions as to where you can give your Mom the ultimate treat. It’s not a celebration without dining out! San Francisco is the dining haven of the California coast, and you and your Mom are sure to have a fantastic time.

Breakfast at Mr. Holmes

Ask around, and every San Francisco resident will point you in the direction or Mr. Holmes Bakery for the best breakfast pastries in the city. We wholeheartedly recommend it! Come in early and line up for cruffin time at the original store in San Francisco (check out the countdown on their website) and indulge in the fresh and yummy croissant/muffin you’ll ever have right out of the oven. Have your mom bring the barako coffee from home to match. Yum!

Learn a Thing Or Two at A Workshop

If you and your mom are the crafty types, why not spend some time together at a workshop? Paxton Gate is hosting a DIY Terrarium Class where you can learn to build decorative terrariums for your home. If you’re not into gardening, there’s also a Hand Lettering Workshop by Internet DIY and lifestyle gurus Brit + Co

Lunch at The Cook and Her Farmer

After a cruffin breakfast, or going for the classic mother’s day brunch, we highly recommend a quick drive to Oakland to the cozy, chic little oyster place called The Cook and Her Farmer. Serving up Yelp-famous Oyster Po Boy sandwiches, or if you’re up for it, their special Marin Miyagi Oysters from Tomales Bay (they have it with a lunch special that gets you wine too!). We heard great things about their Kale Salad and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches too!

9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Tuesday to Thursday

Spa Date

Spend the afternoon with mom in a little slice of heaven and let them spoil and pamper her to death. People recommend a sleepover staycation or even a two night, stay at the Spa Solage in Calistoga. The amenities include free bike rentals, top notch accommodations, a heated mineral pool, complimentary fitness classes and other cool things. Everyone is raving about the spa treatments, and did we mention they serve pretty good food at their Sol Bar too? (Don't believe us? Check out Chef Sally Camacho's Tour of Wine Country!)

A Fabulous Dinner Feast

Once you’ve found yourself all spa-ed out, we recommend heading out for some dinner. Take a little trip to Greece together at Evvia Estiatorio in Palo Alto while already plotting your next mother-daughter adventure. The diners highly recommend the lamb chops, crispy zucchini cakes and Greek’s famous dips and pita bread.

Catch a Show

One of our favorite special occasion activities is to go out and catch a musical. With the rich theatre scene is San Francisco, we can’t help but recommend that you book tickets to see a show! Relive your favorite childhood movie with Roger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, or explore the fabulous world of drag queens and their shoes on Kinky Boots, the 2013 Tony Award winning musical created by Cyndi Lauper and produced by Harvey Fierstein.

A Mother’s Day Nightcap

No evening would be complete without a toast to celebrate Mom. Have a quick nip to the Financial District in San Francisco and have a small nightcap at Wayfare Tavern. If you’ve elected to skip the musical entirely, have dinner here instead. Tyler Florence’s restaurant has people craving for devilled eggs, but the slice of coconut cake looked pretty good when paired with Rosé.
