Pia's Postcards: New York City

Written by: Carla De Guzman/Tuesday, Jun 12, 2018 03:20 AM

There’s just something about Pia Wurtzbach—a grace, elegance and poise that can’t be denied. Marry that with the bright, infectious energy of New York City, and you have yourself an instant hit.

On her first episode of Pia’s Postcards, we follow along on a typical day in New York City. It’s always fascinating to see one of the most famous cities in the world from a Pinoy’s point of view, much less a former Miss Universe winner who lived that life. From early morning rehearsals to delicious dinner along Broadway, what goes on in a regular day for Pia?

Day One, Evening: Sherri Hill Fashion Show
Pia’s schedule starts off at the historic Gotham Hall on Broadway, one of the most famous event spaces in the City, for the Sherri Hill Fashion Show. It’s a busy morning, with hair and makeup teams bustling around to make sure that everyone is looking gorgeous. We also catch up with reigning Miss Universe Demi Leigh Nel-Peters.

Day Two, Morning: Photoshoot for Sherri Hill Jewlery
The next day, Pia heads right back to work to a photoshoot for Sherri Hill with noted fashion photographer Fadil Berisha, while rubbing elbows with Sherri Hill herself.

Day Two, Lunch: Catching Up with Sarah Meier
For lunch, Pia caught up with Sarah Meier, the Editor-at-Large for Metro. Sarah is a huge fan of Nicole Ponseca’s Maharlika, famous for their Ube and Waffles (check out the recipe here!), Longsilog and Mango French toast with ube syrup.

Over lunch, the two women discuss how New York has changed them, and why the city’s energy is different. Even Pia agrees that there’s something to New York. “Here I feel like there’s a time for work, and a time for you. I can balance the two lives better here than at home.”

Day Two, After Lunch: Visiting Dumbo
It’s not just the name of a beloved flying elephant, Dumbo is actually short for the District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, on the Brooklyn side of the city. This part of the city shows off the gorgeous Manhattan Bridge, with a spot perfect for an impromptu photoshoot.

Day Two, After Lunch: Meeting Jerry Sibal
From the grittier side of the Manhattan Bridge and back to the shiny Madison Avenue, Pia drops in on legendary events designer Jerry Sibal in his gorgeous Manhattan apartment. Having seen New York in the eighties, it was hard for Jerry to imagine living a life there. But the constant stream of inspiration from museums, events and people just cemented the idea of him living in the city.

Day Two, After Lunch: Grand Central Terminal
Not too far from his place, Jerry takes Pia to her first ever visit to Grand Central Station. The place is bustling with people, with travellers and tourists alike paying homage to the living metro hub. Fantastic basement food aside, Grand Central station’s teal constellation interiors are something you can stare at forever, and has inspired generations.

Day Two, Evening: Once on This Island, Circle in the Square Theatre, Broadway
Pia was just in time to catch Leia Salonga in her latest role as the Goddess of Love on the Revival of Once on This Island. The one act musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a girl from the Antilles archipelago, who invokes the powers of the Gods to help give love to the other people in the island.

Day Two, Dinner: The Palm Restaurant with Lea Salonga
After the show, Pia and Lea catch up at one of the most iconic steakhouses in New York. They talk about bring on Broadway, supporting other shows and choosing to spend more money on theatre tickets than on restaurants.

Day Two, After Dinner: Signing off at Times Square
Standing among the flashing lights in one of New York’s most famous sites, Pia says goodnight to the city that never sleeps.
