Five Free Apps You Need While Traveling

Travel is stressful - what an understatement! With itineraries to keep track of, commuting to figure out and taking photographs, tourists are getting smarter and smarter. Make sure you’ve got these free apps all ready to go on your phone before you hit the airport!

Quite possibly our new favorite way to travel in a new place. When traveling great distances in the city that doesn’t have public transport close, Uber is a quick and easy way to get around. Sometimes it comes out cheaper to take an Uber than a subway or a local taxi, when your party is big enough. Always make sure to check your fare estimates! Since you’re not paying in Philippine Peso anymore, it may not be worth the ride once you convert it. New users get $10 off their first ride, and there’s an Uber XL option for parties bigger than four people.

This nifty little app tells you detailed directions from one point to another, whether you’re travelling across different countries in Europe or just crossing state lines. It can be as detailed as one street to another. Plus, they provide links to the shortest point to point transfers, which comes very useful when looking for local flights.

CityMaps To Go

One of the most obvious signs that you’re a tourist is when you’re walking around with a gigantic city map. CityMaps To Go eliminates that, and is one out our favorite travel apps out there. This free app downloads the map of the city you are in, and has a nifty little compass that points you to the right direction when you’re walking. Did we mention that the map is accessible and searchable offline?

One of the biggest problems we have when travelling is finding a good place to eat.  How would you know which hole-in-the-wall is best? Is that restaurant you walked in to any good? Everyone is on Yelp! these days, reviewing restaurants and recommending places to try. You never know what you might discover!

Amazon Kindle

Lines are practically part of every tourist experience. Why not let the time fly by? Download Kindle on your phone and pick up a copy of one of the many free ebooks on the Amazon eBook store and distract yourself from the hour-long wait.
