Café Crawl: Our Favorite Cafés in Sydney

Written by: Carla De Guzman/Sunday, Apr 15, 2018 03:12 AM

After a couple of days in Sydney, we realized that there are two things they take very seriously—brunch and coffee. There’s no better way to spend an afternoon in the sunny city than to sit down with great brunch food and even better coffee.

After roaming the streets of Seoul (you can see our Seoul favorites here), we’re excited to share with you some of our favorite Sydney cafes, and what you can’t miss while dining there!

Cuckoo Callay

Just in front of the Newtown train station exit is a small shack with a big pink flamingo on their chalkboard, telling guests to write their names down to get a seat. Cuckoo Callay boasts of amazing cofee, and we definitely enjoyed our flat whites. The brunch menu is a walk through wonderland with offerings like The Sideways Shuffle (crab sake with delicious avocado salsa), Gorgeous George (their avocado on toast with pesto and dukkah) and their ultimate dish, the Mac Daddy—a croissant stuffed with mac and cheese, bacon and poached eggs.

Oh and did we mention that they also serve puppaccinos for your furry friends, too?

Black Star Pastry

Black Star Pastry’s claim to fame definitely goes to the floral, fragrant watermelon cake, which has the title of being the Most Instagrammed Cake in the World. We can see why, with the layers of cream and bright red cake topped with dried edible flowers. But Black Star’s offerings aren’t limited! The Dragon Fruit cake looked fresh and tempting, and the Black Sesame chiffon had the lightest of sponges. Any of these cakes with their coffee is perfection.

The Grounds of Alexandria/Grounds of the City

It seems kind of unfair to add the Grounds of Alexandria to this list, given that the location includes at least three different restaurants, but we would be remiss if we didn’t include them in the list. The gorgeous gardens in Alexandria alone make it well worth a visit.

Their iced coffee comes in a small tray that has a cup full of coffee ice cubes, cold milk and a warm shot of espresso. The food  is great too, you can’t go wrong with ordering their pancakes and toasts. Have your coffee while sharing a slice of Strawberries and Chiffon cake with a friend!

Concrete Jungle

After having your fill of Asian food at Spice Alley in Chippendale, walk across the way to Concrete Jungle for what was frankly, one of the best chai lattes we’ve ever had! But Concrete jungle is most famously known for their Blue Majik smoothie bowl, which has granola, blueberries and the like, to go with your coffee.

Bourke Street Bakery

Can’t go wrong with a friendly neighbourhood bakery like Bourke Street. The smell of baked goods just wafts over you as you walk in, and there’s no way to resist. We highly recommend their sandwiches, and the Italian Meringue Raspberry Cream Tart to end your meal.
