Winter 101: The First-timers Guide to Braving the Cold

Oh the weather outside is frightful, and really, there’s no escape. For first timers, to see the temperature drop below zero degrees Celsius (that’s 32 degrees for all you Farenheit lovers out there) is a thought that will make you want to just stay under the covers forever. We’ve got a few tips for you to be able to stand the cold, and to make sure your winter stays cool.

Winter Tip # 1: Moisturize me!

One of the awful things that happen in the winter is that your skin dries up really quickly. Make sure you put on heaps of moisturizer (or lotion!) on your face and body to avoid windburn or cracked heels, which can make things painful and difficult for you. Moisture also helps lock in your body’s heat. The Honest Co. has a really great organic healing balm that keeps skin nice and moisturized, if you don’t mind the smell.

Winter Tip # 2: Cover Crucial Areas

If only you could walk around in blankets, right? But after spending some time in the zero degree cold, we found that our bodies keep warmth on our necks, our ankles and the tops of our heads. If those parts are well warmed, there’s no need to wear several T-shirts at one time.

Winter Tip # 3: Outerwear Blues

There is no need to walk around the city with eight layers of sweaters when it starts getting cold. Cold weather experts swear that a good bubble coat with a fur hood and a warm sweater will go a long way. Uniqlo has a lot of lightweight options that don’t break the bank, and keep you warm inside. Second to this come the thick wool jackets that keep your silhouette slim while helping you stay cozy. For that, we always take to Old Navy for options in different sizes.

Winter Tip # 4: Inner Warmth

If you think about it, a good coat is just icing on the cake of your everyday winter outfit. What make up the core are a good thermal shirt in long sleeves, leggings, and knee-high socks (or thick stockings). Then you wear the outfit of your choice on top before putting on your coat and gloves and heading out.

Winter Tip # 5: Scarf It Up

Never underestimate the power of a good scarf. Big blanket scarves and thick, wool ones are very on trend right now, and are so comfortable to just wrap around your neck. Some even wrap it around their heads under their hoodies for extra comfort!
