Six Sisters and A Bathroom

Living with a large family has got its ups and downs. Some days having that many people around at one time can be a circus, other days it feels like home.

For a brief period from 2008-2010, my six sisters and I shared one bedroom, with only one bathroom between all of us. It was a logistical issue—we were living in a house that wasn’t really made for a family of 12 people but if the girls bunked up two in a room, it would cost way too much in terms of electricity. So the girls agreed to stay together and the boys agreed to stay together.

Staying in a room with all your sisters automatically means that every little conflict becomes huge because of the pile-on. One sibling would side with the other, eventually dragging everyone into the fight maelstrom. It also means always being late for a family event, because you would need to allot at least three hours for each girl to shower, primp and prepare.

But with the downsides come the upsides as well. I remember us girls snuggling up in our beds and watching Boys Over Flowers (the Korean version) for the first time, dying of kilig over each of the boys. I remember midnight conversations you can only have with your sisters, talking about our personal issues and bucking each other up when things got hard. In that room, all six of us made fashion choices, shared clothes, talked about books, movies and series to devour. We danced to Beyoncé every chance we got, and had more fun in that haunted horror of a house than we thought we would.

There is a special bond you get with your sisters when you have to stay in an enclosed space with them. Some days I miss it, and when that happens, I just have to walk into the other girls’ room, flop into their bed and start  a conversation. I still share a bathroom with my sisters, but at least this time there are only three of us to a bathroom, and that's a lot more breathing space. I know it’s not going to last forever, but while it’s here, I’m happy to make the most out of it as I can.
