Self Calming Techniques to Try Today

When one is under attack, they say that you have either a fight or flight instinct—which goes regardless of the kind of attack your come in to. For a lot of people, criticism feels a lot like an attack, and we recommend you try any of these self-calming techniques if you feel overwhelmed. 


Count to Ten

Sometimes it's as simple as taking a beat to calm yourself down. Take a deep inhale and slowly count to ten while exhaling slowly. The break of tension will help you calm down and be able to think clearer, especially in the face of a stressful situation. 


Clench and Release

Physically creating and releasing tension is a great way to calm yourself down. Artist Dina Rodriguez lists a group of easy pre-painting techniques you can perform, including clenching and releasing your fists repeatedly. not only does it get the muscles in your hands working, but the stress/release action becomes a physical cue for your body to release stress.


Dragon Breath

This tip is Queer Eye approved! Make the shape of your phone with your hand. Press your pinky against the top of your left nostril, inhale, close your right nostril with your thumb, exhale before you inhale again. Repeat this action repeatedly for about a minute to release the stress. 


Diaphragm Breathing

Place one hand on your chest and another on your belly. As you breathe in, make sure that you belly (not your chest!) pushes up against your hand, not your chest. Six to ten of these deep breaths in a minute for ten minutes can help you re-center yourself before you have to deal with whatever is being hurled at you.
