Geraldine Roman: Our Softness is Our Greatest Strength

Written by: Carla De Guzman/Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 08:33 AM

During the stream of news flooding into our social media feeds, one of the highlights of the 2016 election results was the victory of Geraldine B. Roman as congresswoman for the 1st District of Bataan. While her win was unquestioned, what was applauded was that she ran her campaign openly proclaiming that she was a transgender woman. She was unabashed in her ideal that everyone—regardless of gender and orientation—must be treated with dignity.

Months later, Geraldine, along with other representatives Emmeline Aglipay- Villar, Kaka Bag-ao  and Senator Risa Hontiveros is now fighting for the passage of the Anti-Discrimation Bill on the Basis of Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity, a bill that hopes to lay down laws to end discrimination against people based on their gender or sexuality.  She is considered by many as an inspiration in her championing of LGBTQ rights a part of the ripple of change that has happened in our society today.

We’ve talked to others about their transition before. It is not easy, living as one sex while knowing, deep down in your soul, that this is not who you really are. To Geraldine, who began her transition in her early twenties, going through the procedure was difficult, but "my turmoil is over. At last, my body is aligned with my true self." Her happiness has led her to seek a life of serving others, as her father taught her when he was alive.

There will be many stumbling blocks on her way to the finish line—but Geraldine knows that she’s not alone on her fight to equality. Her life and advocacy will always remain in the belief inspired by her father's words: "As long as your life revolves around yourself and you do not help others, your life has no meaning."

Love Wins: 10 Years Strong
Most people don’t expect a serious relationship to bud from a random encounter in the bar. You have a few drinks with the person, flirt a little, exchange numbers, and sometimes it ends at that. Herbs Samonte certainly thought that that would be the case with Frank Pelpinosas, but Destiny had other plans.
