Find Your Truth: Nikki Torres Talks about Life

Written by: Carla De Guzman/Monday, Mar 13, 2017 02:45 PM

“As a child, I had a very negative image of myself,” shares blogger and fitness guru Nikki Torres as she stretches her lithe body over the yoga mat. It’s hard to believe that a girl like her would have insecurities—she is, after all, the blogger behind Pretty Darn Fit. The site features stories on living a healthy lifestyle, getting the exercise you need while keeping your inner and outer self well. Nikki believes that the journey to a healthy life shouldn't be for medical or aesthetic reasons, as those are the ones that will most easily take you off track when the change isn't instantaneous. "I believe the first step to living a holistic lifestyle is to learn to be content, to like what you see in the mirror. You have to want to make the change because you love yourself. Working out and eating right should never be a punishment for your body."

Nikki started out at the exact same place where everyone starts out--with a struggle at the beginning. "Back in college I would always be on the lookout for ways to get fitter. I followed DVD’s (there wasn’t much to find on Youtube at the time), or I would run outdoors," she shares with us. Back then, it was the challenge of keeping up the practice and finding stillness that she found a great challenge, but it was what made her fall in love with yoga in the first place.

She believes that true health and wellness comes from a healthy, balanced lifestyle, and her blog is a true testament to that. When discussing her philosophy on a holistic lifestyle, she lists five major components on her website, namely, Yoga, Food, Music and Dance and Personal and Spiritual Development. "Yoga and Dance allow the body to move freely and encourages freely expressing ourselves. The same goes with art and music, except that the outputs are different. Some people prefer movement, others prefer sound or visual art. We see these as channels for personal and spiritual development. Being part of a community that harnesses every person’s potential in any of these platforms also helps draw out the best in us and LiFE Mind Body Soul Center provides that space. You don’t have to be flexible, coordinated or a good dancer. You don’t have to be a great artist or musician to become part of the community. Everyone is welcome."

But she didn’t really intend to be on this path—she recalls that her mother wanted her to be a news anchor when she started college.  After graduating college, she pursued a career in the advertising industry. But while the job had its highs, Nikki had a feeling that she wasn't living up to her best life--the life that she deserved and wanted for herself. So she made the switch, and the choice:

"We can choose to be controlled by our jobs and our busy schedules or we can choose to be in control of our own lives. We all have something we are passionate about. I found mine in helping others become healthier, fitter, stronger (inside and out). Making time to live the life you want is something you make an effort to do. Besides, nothing worth it comes easy."

The transition from yoga student to teacher, and the career shift itself didn't happen instantaneously. "I was three years into my personal yoga practice when I decided that I wanted to share it with others. You have to love it so much to teach it! So much that you can still share positive energy in class even on bad days. That’s how I felt about yoga. When I saw that more people could benefit from it, I decided to give teaching a shot." Now, four years into being a teacher, Nikki still finds joy in seeing her students grow, and being able to guide them through their personal challenges in class has been one of her favorite parts of being a yoga teacher.
